A man who threatened a police officer while on a suspended prison sentence has been spared jail.

Mark Wiggett, of Kittiwake Close, Ipswich, pleaded guilty at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court to threatening behaviour during a night out in the town.

He also admitted being in breach of a suspended prison term imposed on May 25.

Prosecutor Tess Mann said Wiggett went out on October 30 with a group of people, which included a brother and a sister.

They were outside Revolution in the Cattle Market where the brother and sister were arguing.

The group split up. A police officer told them to leave the area.

Wiggett ran over and due to his aggressive nature was taken to the ground.

He calmed down and was warned by an officer about his behaviour.

Wiggett then went over to his friend’s sister.

The group reformed after about five minutes.

The officer went over and Wiggett told the officer to leave the brother and sister alone.

The group were informed they had been told to leave the area but had returned.

Wiggett puffed his chest out and became aggressive in his stance, getting very close to the officer.

He was told to stand back but swore at the officer and then came forward again.

Wiggett was again taken to the ground and arrested.

The court heard he had to be restrained when taken to the cells at the police investigation centre.

Wiggett received his suspended prison sentence for breaching a restraining order.

John Hughes, representing Wiggett, said his client’s previous offences related to the break up of a relationship.

Mr Hughes added: “Mr Wiggett fully accepts his behaviour fell far below that of a reasonable person.”

The court was told Wiggett had written to police officer involved.

Magistrates added an extra 10 days to a community order which he had previously received. Wiggett was also fined £80 for threatening behaviour and told he must pay £85 costs and £20 to the victims’ fund.
