ROAD menace John Moir is back behind bars today after being caught driving while disqualified for the 37th time.

The 45-year-old, who has now racked up 208 convictions, has continued to show his contempt for the law despite nearly killing a man in a hit-and-run in Grafton Way, Ipswich, in 2010.

Since then he has been caught driving while disqualified on three further occasions shortly after being released from jail terms.

Moir, of Felixstowe Road, Ipswich, is now serving 16 weeks in prison after appearing before Ipswich magistrates for his latest offences, which occurred on May 23.

The T-registration Hyundai Lantra he was driving was spotted in Colchester Road by an officer operating automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) equipment.

The ANPR registered the vehicle as suspicious. When the officer went to follow the Hyundai it was said to have driven off and turned into Rushmere Road.

It then went into Thornley Drive, before going into Winston Avenue, a cul-de-sac, where it came to a halt in a driveway.

Police afound Moir in the vehicle’s passenger seat and a woman walking around the car. However, the woman told an officer that Moir had been driving.

In addition to admitting to driving while disqualified, Moir also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance when he appeared before South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court.

Moir was convicted of his 35th and 36th disqualified driving offences in September last year and was imprisoned for 14 months.

The offences occurred eight days after Moir was released on licence from an 18-month prison sentence – of which he served half – that he was given for almost killing Simon Jacobs, of Pinewood, Ipswich.

In addition to driving despite being banned and without insurance on August 16, 2011, Moir had stolen DVDs, gym clothing and a handbag from two cars.

Four days later he drove while disqualified and without insurance again, and perverted the course of justice by giving police a false name.

Sentencing Moir at Ipswich Crown Court last September, Judge John Devaux said: “You show no sign of changing your ways.”
