Ipswich rush hour traffic chaos

IPSWICH was left in rush hour traffic chaos today after two accidents on its busiest roads caused major traffic jams – and another smash left four people in hospital.

A one-vehicle accident on the Felixstowe bound A12 just before Martlesham caused tailbacks as far as Woodbridge after one carriageway had to be sealed off.

The smash occurred at around 8.15am and involved a Renault 5.

Three police cars attended the scene as well as a tow truck, which took the damaged car away sometime later.

Luckily the man did not suffer any injuries and was just left shaken following the crash.

The second accident occurred on the Bury-bound A14 just before 8.30am. Four vehicles, a Ford Fiesta, BMW, Ford Mondeo and a Vauxhall Astra are all believed to have been involved in a shunt that occurred just before the Orwell Bridge.

All of the drivers are believed to have suffered minor injuries but no ambulances were called with the three female victims and the one male victim declining treatment.

A little boy who was a passenger in the BMW also suffered a bump to the head.

Sergeant Steve Brooks of Suffolk police traffic department attended both accidents. He said: "Luckily there were no injuries in either accident, I think in the first accident the driver had a lucky escape as his car was a complete write-off. The second accident appears to be just a shunt and luckily everyone is ok.

"However, it has caused a lot of tailbacks and a lot of problems for motorists."

At 9.15am police and ambulances attended an accident on Sandyhill Lane, Ipswich where a car had been involved in a collision with a skip lorry.

Four people were taken to Ipswich Hospital – two suffering from neck injuries. An ambulance control room operator said she was unable to give any further information, but said: "We sent three ambulances and one rapid response vehicle. I am unable to comment further until the accident is cleared up."
