Ipswich magistrates have jailed a shoplifter after he and his friend stole ski goggles from an Ipswich store.

Luke Dummer, of Turret Lane, Ipswich, pleaded guilty two charges of stealing from shops when he appeared before South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court.

The 28-year-old also admitted being in breach of a suspended four-week prison sentence when he committed the offences.

His friend Charlie Harris, 26, also of Turret Lane, Ipswich, pleaded guilty to one accusation of theft from a shop.

Prosecutor Colette Harper said the pair went into Trespass in Westgate Street on December 15.

Harris stole two pairs of ski goggles worth £124.98, while Dummer stole one pair worth £69.99.

Dummer then tried to sell the pair he stole at Cash Converters.

On December 17 Dummer walked into Peacock’s in Carr Street with Harris.

Dummer put some items of children’s clothing, worth around £28, down his trousers before going to the till where he paid for other items before leaving the store.

Although Harris was with him he took no part in the theft.

The court heard Dummer was given a four-week suspended prison term on November 2 for a theft offence.

Harris, who has 41 previous offences – 22 of which were for theft, had also been given a suspended prison sentence on December 22 for four offences of shoplifting.

However, his solicitor Lyndon Davies pointed out that if the Trespass theft matter had been dealt with at the same time the likelihood would have been that there would have been no further penalty.

Magistrates ordered Harris to pay £85 costs and compensation of £124.98 to Trespass.

However, Dummer was jailed for a total of eight weeks and ordered to pay £80 to the victims’ fund.
