IPSWICH: A shoplifting mum-of-four who tried to steal dozens of clothes worth more than 1,300 from Marks & Spencer is beginning a six-week jail term today.

Gadriye Ali was caught sneaking out of the store in Westgate Street, Ipswich, after cramming dresses, tops, swimsuits, cashmere cardigans and a winter coat into M&S carrier bags.

South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court heard the value of the clothing came to 1,357.

The court was told Ali – who is a long-term drug addict – claimed her shoplifting spree was motivated by her need to raise money to be used for a 500 deposit for permanent housing.

Although a south-east London resident, Ali had been staying with friends in Ipswich before she was arrested last Friday.

She was detained shortly before 2.30pm after being spotted on the store’s CCTV selecting and stuffing numerous items into bags from various parts of the store.

The 43-year-old then left the shop by the rear doors from the first floor of the building.

Security staff alerted police and Ali was arrested near Tower Ramparts shortly afterwards.

She was taken to Ipswich police station, interviewed and then charged.

Ali was remanded in custody until her court appearance.

Ali pleaded guilty to theft when she appeared before District Judge David Cooper.

Judge Cooper sentenced Ali to 42 days in custody, but told her: “You’ll be out in 21”.
