Harriet Tricker, an 18-year-old from Ipswich who only started running a year ago, is running the Brighton Marathon this weekend for charity.
The teenager is raising funds for Marie Curie, which provided great support to her family during a relative’s recent battle with cancer.
She said: “I’ve only been running for just over a year. When I first started, I couldn’t run more than a few hundred yards before having to stop.
“Since then, I’ve gradually built up my stamina and last year I ran the Amsterdam half marathon.
“The support you get while running a big event is amazing. I had my name on a t-shirt and everyone constantly encourages you. If you have lost your faith in humanity then you should watch or take part in a marathon or half marathon.”
The Easton and Otley College student, who is studying a level three public services course, said her training has gone to plan.
She added: “It’s been going really well. I’m almost up to 20 miles. I’ll be over the moon if I can finish this. If this goes well I’d eventually like to do the London or Boston marathons.”
The 26-mile challenges takes place on Sunday.
Easton and Otley College spokesman John Nice said, “Easton and Otley is extremely proud of Harriet. The college made a small donation of £30 and staff and students will be supporting a bake sale that she is hosting.
“She is a determined student so I’m sure she will meet this challenge head on. We wish her all the very best.”
