An Ipswich teenager who claimed he was carrying a kitchen knife in the town centre for protection has been given a community order.

Christon Duberry, of Kelly Road, pleaded guilty at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court to possessing a knife in a public place.

The offence occurred on May 15 in Falcon Street.

Prosecutor Tess Mann said a police officer was on patrol around the area of Revolution nightspot in the early hours.

The officer saw 19-year-old Duberry, who was carrying a can of lager, with two other males.

Duberry and his friends moved away for a while. However, about 25 minutes later the officer was approached by a member of the public who said Duberry had a knife in his bag.

After being spoken to Duberry admitted he had the knife, saying it was for his personal protection.

Mrs Mann said the teenager added his mother would “go mad” if he she found out he had taken it.

The court was told the knife had a four-and-a-half inch blade. Duberry – who had no previous convictions - had it in a black manbag across his chest.

John Hughes, representing Duberry, said his client had been having a difficult time in the area where he lives.

Magistrates were told the teenager had been taken to Ipswich Hospital’s accident and emergency department a week or two before the offence after he had been assaulted.

Mr Hughes added: “He is regularly picked upon.”

Duberry was sentenced to a six-month community order with an attendance centre requirement.

He was also given a 12-week curfew from 7pm to 6am every Saturday and Sunday.

In addition Duberry must pay £15 costs and £85 to the victims’ fund.
