A TEENAGER has been accused of raping a 14-year-old girl on a riverbank in Ipswich.

Helal Abedin, 19, of Stopford Court, Ipswich, was brought before South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court on Saturday charged with raping the girl on Thursday.

The matter can only be dealt with by the crown court and the bench agreed to adjourn the case to the higher court for a preliminary hearing on September 24.

Abedin was remanded in custody and there was no application for bail.

Police are appealing for people who were in the Tower Mill area of Ipswich, near the river, on Thursday between 9pm and 10pm to call them.
