The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has donated $10,000 in memory of Ipswich star Elena Baltacha

Elena, known as Bally, died last month aged 30 and will be remembered at the Rally For Bally on June 15 with a series of exhibition matches.

The former British number one was diagnosed with liver cancer in January, two months after retiring from tennis, and her funeral was held in Ipswich.

The ITF also awarded her the first Fed Cup Lifetime Achievement Heart Award for her commitment to the competition.

Its donation to the rally has taken the money raised so far to more than £40,000, with funds to be shared between the Elena Baltacha Academy of Tennis and the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

Baltacha’s husband and long-time coach Nino Severino, who set up the academy with her, was at Roland Garros for the cheque and replica Fed Cup presentation.

Judy Murray, Britain’s Fed Cup captain, said: “I can honestly say you could not have asked for a better player to lead your team.

“She was a role model to the younger players, an amazing professional, selfless, humble and the heart of a lion.

“The funds will go into her academy so we make sure we remember her and that we produce lots more fighters just like her.”
