Permission has been granted for a two-day music festival at the home of the Suffolk Show – despite objections from residents.

Trinity Park Events Ltd intends to hold the event in either June, July, or August and make it an annual attraction.

As yet details of an event this year at the showground on the edge of Ipswich have not been finalised.

Suffolk Coastal council’s licensing and health sub committee was told the open-air event was to have been a jazz festival, but the promoter had withdrawn. The intention was to have soft, low key music and heavy rock music would not feature.

Resident Kevin Bye, whose home is near Trinity Park, which sits between Felixstowe Road and Bucklesham Road, objected to the premises licence for the music event, voicing fears that the music would be very loud and disturb enjoyment of his home.

He envisaged a “significant noise nuisance” and said a similar event at the showground around eight years ago had been noisy until 12.30am.

Councillors were told the stage would be in the north-east part of the showground, facing away from homes, and noise buffers would also be used.

Noise expert Richard Byers, on behalf of Trinity Park Events, said surveys of levels at the boundary of the site had been found to be acceptable.

The sub committee agreed the licence for the event.

A spokeswoman said: “Clearly, as a matter of common sense, there is the potential for disturbance for Mr Bye and other residents.”

However, the council’s environmental health officer had recommended a series of conditions to control any disturbance to people living in the area.

She said: “These conditions are rigorous and, in our judgement, give a high level of protection to local residents and ought to remove any substantial risk of public nuisance.”
