BOROUGH councillors could be banned from “tweeting” during council meetings if one opposition councillor has his way.

Conservative Richard Pope asked whether the borough’s standing orders could be changed to ban councillors from tweeting during meetings.

Labour’s Alasdair Ross and Conservative Nadia Cenci are regular users of the social networking site – and Mr Ross was using it to provide a commentary to the meeting.

Mr Pope’s bid has come under fire from some of his own party – former councillor Gavin Maclure was at last night’s meeting and said the move made the Conservatives appear out of touch with the modern world.

Executive member Martin Cook, in answer to Mr Pope’s question, said the issue could be looked at – but felt many councillors saw social media as a useful way to keep in touch with their voters.
