A STEADY stream of water which has been leaking for more than a week, will continue for a few more days yet, utility bosses confirmed today.

Anglian Water sent contractors to fix the problem in Ipswich last Tuesday. The firm said it had been diagnosed as a minor leak which caused no disturbance to customers and was classed as a low priority.

But the leak in Crown Street is likely to continue for some time yet, a spokesman for the firm confirmed.

“Contractors realised the stop tap that is leaking mains water also supplies water to a nearby factory, so we are unable to do the repair straight away,” the spokesman said.

“We need to switch the factory off to get the work done, so we’re talking with them about how we can minimise the impact.

“It might not happen for another week.”

The spokesman, who could not confirm how many litres of water had been lost, said a second inspection took place on Tuesday.Concerns have been raised about the water, which is escaping from a manhole in the Crown Street lay-by, outside Crown House.

Ipswich resident Matthew Gird, 33, who walks past the leak on his way to work at Crown House, said: “It seems an awful amount of water being wasted considering that this is such a precious resource.

“It’s almost as if now the water levels are fine they’re aren’t as worried.

“We do our bit at home to save water and then you see there is a water leak and there is nothing being done.”
