He’s big. He’s hairy. And now he has his own name!
The replica mammoth on show at Ipswich Museum has been named Wool-I-Am by youngsters taking part in activities at the High Street.
The search for a name started in earnest last month after the mammoth got a mention on the Radio 2 Breakfast show by stand-in host Sara Cox.
She asked listeners to help and thousands did. Sara, who was standing in for Chris Evans, sent the museum a shortlist. Members of the museum’s young activities club, The Mini Mammoths, did the rest.
The name sparked a social media frenzy, with millions of impressions on Twitter. Pictures of head of culture Gordon Mole and a mammoth toy were also re-tweeted around the country, along with suggestions for names.
But the original suggestion, Wool-I-Am, caught the imagination of the youngsters and the mammoth will be formally named at their session tomorrow.
Two year old Isobel, whose mother Mel Hollis runs the Mini Mammoths club, was the first to congratulate Wool-I-Am on his new name.
