Work to repair a hole which appeared in the middle of an Ipswich street is expected to be finished by the end of this week.

Investigations have now taken place into the opening in Cavendish Street and it has been established it was caused by a collapsed sewer.

The area around the hole was sealed off last week with metal fencing, which caused some problems for car drivers in the street.

But with work now taking place to fix the problem, the road could be fully re-opened by the middle of the week.

A spokesman for tSuffolk County Council said: “As planned the investigation was carried out at the end of last week, as suspected this hole was the result of a collapsed sewer below the surface of the road, this isn’t a sink hole so there is no risk of further collapse.

“Operatives are confident that works can be carried out to repair the hole in the road and they envisage this being completed with the road reopened before the end of the week.”

Speaking to the Ipswich Star last week, Liz Harsant, a borough councillor for Holywells ward, which Cavendish Street is in, said the road is chaotic most of the time because of changes to traffic systems in the area but she added the hole had not helped that.
