Bus passengers in Ipswich are getting the chance to try out a brand new £200,000 double decker bus that could become part of the company’s fleet over the next few years.

The Enviro 400 bus is made by British company Alexander Dennis, and is being tried out on routes around the town before the end of next week.

It is finished to a high standard with leather seats and upstairs they are arranged around tables in a similar fashion to railway carriages.

Ipswich Buses managing director Jeremy Cooper said the company was gauging the views of passengers before deciding whether to put in an order for the vehicles.

He said: “It is a high-quality vehicle and it is British made, they are made in Yorkshire and Falkirk. From our point of view, what is also important is that they share many of the same parts as our most modern single-deck buses and that makes them much easier to maintain.”

Mr Cooper said if the company did place an order, the buses would not necessarily have the same seating configuration as the demonstrator.

“But if we get very positive feedback on that from our passengers then we might consider it. Certainly the table configuration might be popular on any longer journeys that it is used for.”

The bus can turn up on any Ipswich Buses route served by double-deckers – all pass through the Tower Ramparts bus station and staff there are keen to hear any feedback from passengers about their journey on the vehicle.
