Starstruck pupils at a Suffolk primary school gasped and cheered as The Voice contestants Tania Hambleton and Ryan North treated the excited youngsters to a mini concert.

The pair, who together form music duo RYT, impressed the judging panel with their rendition of the JCB song by Nizlopi earlier this month, managing to get through to the next stage of the ITV show.

Essex star Olly Murs was the first to turn his chair, saying the song was one of his favourites and that he loved their harmonies.

Much to the delight of pupils, Tania took a trip down memory lane yesterday and paid a visit to her former school, Gorseland Primary School in Martlesham.

Speaking after she and boyfriend Ryan performed three songs in a school assembly, the 24-year-old said: “It was surreal (coming back). It was amazing, so nice to see all the little ones.

“I remember some of it, but obviously it was a long time ago so a lot of it has changed.

“They are just all so lovely and they stayed so quiet throughout it all, I couldn’t believe it. They were so well behaved.

“I would love to be a role model for them, I don’t know if they will see me as one but obviously I went to this school and so it would be lovely if at least one little one saw me as a role model.”

Tania, also a former Kesgrave High School pupil, added: “My mum knew the headteacher really well, so she was very fond of the school and it treated me well throughout the five or six years that I was here.”

Before the pair performed Tania’s former teacher Ian Raindle introduced her and said that when she was in his Year One class she was very quiet.

He added that he was thrilled to see she managed to find her voice through music.

Ryan, who is 30, said the pair are waiting for the blind auditions to finish before taking on the battle stage.

He added: “It’s been brilliant to get to this stage because there were so many rounds before the actual TV bit.”

The couple, who have both loved music from a young age, said Witham-born judge Olly was their first choice from the start.

Tania added: “Olly is lovely – he’s just a normal guy, you don’t feel starstruck or anything because he is just lovely.

“I think Olly being a local boy also makes him more normal – when I’m speaking to him because I feel like ‘oh, he’s just my mate from down the road’.”
