A 32-year-old man has died after two jet skis collided in an East Anglian estuary.

The Chelmsford jet skier suffered a broken neck and died despite efforts from rescue services and a passing speedboat which brought the unconscious man ashore, on the river Blackwater, Essex.

A rescue helicopter was scrambled after a member of the public dialled 999 from a mobile phone at 12.30pm yesterday and alerted Thames coastguard.

Bradwell coastguard requested the launch of a lifeboat and Essex ambulance and police were also on hand at the scene of the accident off St Lawrence Bay.

A member of Bradwell coastguard tried to resuscitate the man before he was taken to Colchester General Hospital by the rescue helicopter, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The second jet skier was also taken to the Colchester hospital suffering from shock.

"This is a very tragic incident for all involved but highlights the dangers of these high speed personal water craft operating in such close proximity," said Thames Coastguard watch manager, Simon Milnes.
