The development, which will increase the size of the store by a third, has been welcomed by town mayor Barry Salmon who hopes it will encourage more people to shop in the town centre.
Mr Salmon said: "This is good news for the town and by bringing in George clothing it will give people more choice when shopping.

"We will be offering the George clothing range for the first time in store, alongside a full deli, fish counter and rotisserie offer.
"The addition of 70 jobs also brings great news to the town. We will be increasing the store to 30,000 sq ft (net) with the 7,500 sq ft (net) extension.''
Marilyn Finbow, a trader in the town and town councillor, said she was delighted to see Asda expanding with a range of new products, including the popular George range which might encourage people to stay and shop locally.
She said: "This will mean more jobs, more prosperity and is part of the regeneration for the town centre. This will keep business within the town.''
Stowmarket is expanding with many more homes being built and news that there will be more on offer at one of the major superstores in the town has been welcomed.
Shopper Lynda Robinson, of Kent Road in Stowmarket, said: "This is really good news. Some people I know go out to Ipswich to buy George clothes and then carry on shopping there. The more people shop in Stowmarket, the better for local businesses and everyone.''
Work will start on the extension during June and should be completed by the beginning of November.
Asda are not the only big superstore expanding in Stowmarket: Solar Co-op, at Combs Ford, are also currently adding an extension to their store on the other side of the town.
