Jobs threat in Bramford

JOBS could be under threat in Bramford after fertiliser supplier The Scotts Company announced it is considering the closure of its Suffolk manufacturing site.

JOBS could be under threat in Bramford after fertiliser supplier The Scotts Company announced it is considering the closure of its Suffolk manufacturing site.

The company is entering a three-month consultation period with staff over possible plans to close the site near Ipswich with the potential loss of about 70 jobs.

The announcement made today is related to the business's review of its fertilisers and chemicals manufacturing strategy in the UK.

Nick Kirkbride, managing director of The Scotts Company (UK) Ltd, said: "The plan to close the Bramford production facility has been developed reluctantly to try to bring manufacturing capacity of granular fertilisers in line with market demand. We have two sites in the UK, but both are operating below capacity.

"This consultation period will allow us to discuss the impact of the plan with the employees affected, before coming to a final decision."

If the Bramford plant closes, production could be relocated to Scotts' Howendyke site in Goole, East Yorkshire, and a Scotts plant at Bourth in Normandy, France.

Employees working at Scotts' main office on the Suffolk site will be unaffected.
