MOTORISTS travelling along the A14 were not exactly sailing along today as a huge boat was transported from Cambridge to an Ipswich marina.

The 81ft long and 59 tonne Fairline cruiser was heading for the New Haven Marina in Ipswich having left Cambridgeshire at about 6.30am.

Len Bond, abnormal loads officer for Suffolk police, said: "All large loads cause problems because they are bigger than the average vehicle on the road.

"However, the traffic officers who accompany the wide-load, do their best to pull the trailer over at regular intervals to allow motorists to pass in order to try and prevent long tailbacks."

Electricity workmen had to be on hand to lift live cables to allow the load to pass underneath.

More then 20,000 abnormal loads moved through Suffolk last year.
