A suspected burglar has been arrested after police found a large-scale cannabis factory in Hadleigh.

Up to 1,000 plants at various stages of growth were discovered in the early hours of the morning at an industrial unit in Crockatt Road on the Lady Lane Industrial Estate.

Although police have not revealed the value of the Class B drug found, it will be at least tens of thousands of pounds if not a six-figure sum.

The discovery came after officers were despatched to the area at around 3am on Saturday following reports of suspicious activity.

While searching the area an officer noticed a vehicle. On closer inspection he also saw a damaged door at one of the industrial units.

When the officer looked inside he found a fully-fledged cannabis factory, which included electrical and hydroponic equipment to aid the plants’ growth.

While at the premises the officer also found a man, who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary said the 25-year-old suspect from Barking was taken to Martlesham police investigation centre for questioning.

He was then released on police bail, pending further enquiries, and must return to the investigation centre on May 26.

Police have said that their inquiry is continuing and confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with the production of the cannabis found.

Natalie Doughty, of Suffolk Constabulary, said: “We would appeal for anyone who saw anything suspicious in relation to the industrial unit, or has information about the cannabis which was found, to contact officers on 101. Alternatively they can telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
