LASER equipment has been used to make sure all bowlers are getting an equal rub of the green when they play at Felixstowe Leisure Centre.

LASER equipment has been used to make sure all bowlers are getting an equal rub of the green when they play at Felixstowe Leisure Centre.

Suffolk Coastal council, in conjunction with Felixstowe Indoor Bowls Club (FIBC), has provided a new wooden floor under the green rinks and called in lasers to make sure it's a level playing field.

Thanks to the use of the hi-tech equipment, the wooden floor is now level within 0.75mm across the entire surface, putting an end to the problem slope that caused woods to fall off line in the outside two rinks.

To mark this success and the start of their 2001/2002 season, the FIBC will be joined by the chairman of Suffolk Coastal District Council, Doreen Savage for a special day of events tomorrow.

Mrs Savage will have the honour of bowling the first wood of the new indoor season shortly after 10am.

This will be followed by a day of competitions and visits by celebrity bowlers, including champion John Rednall.

Councillor Maggy Steen, chairman of Suffolk Coastal's leisure and tourism committee said: "We are committed to continually improving the council's leisure facilities as part of Suffolk Coastal's best value improvement plan, which recently gained the top possible three-star rating from the Audit Commission.

"This project, with funding from both Suffolk Coastal and Felixstowe Indoor Bowls Club, is an excellent example of working in partnership with local organisations to provide a better service for the public."

The leisure centre in Undercliff Road West is owned by the district council and run by its Contract Services Unit. The bowls club run the bowls greens under an arrangement with the council.
