Road closures have already been put in place around Portman Road as organisers prepare for the arrival of thousands of football fans.
Highways chiefs closed off a section of the road at its junction with Princes Street at around 6am today to prepare for today’s game, which will see Ipswich Town take on East Anglian rivals Norwich City.
Police are encouraging both sets of fans to arrive at the ground early – with stadium bars and turnstiles opening from 10.30am ready for a 12pm kick-off.
Later in the morning various road closures will be put into place in Princes Street at its junctions with Chancery Road, Chalon Street and Commercial Road.
Ranelagh Road and Burrell Road may also be affected.
• Big match preview: Ipswich Town v Norwich City – Everything you need to knowPolice commander for the match, Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Parkes said: “As usual for this derby game there will be a high profile police presence to ensure all supporters arrive and leave the ground safely and enjoy the game.
“We are supported by colleagues from across the east of England as well as horses from the Metropolitan Police.
“I would ask that anyone planning to be in the town centre area of Ipswich today takes note of the road closures and congestion expected.”
Road closures will remain in place for a short time after the game has ended.
Buses will also be diverted while Princes Street is closed – members of the public are being advised to call operators or check online for service details, including the location of alternative bus stops.
Bag searches are taking place to make sure supporters are safe – fans are being encouraged to arrive early to reduce bottlenecks into the stadium.
Det Supt Parkes added: “Whilst we will not tolerate mindless anti-social behaviour, violence or racist chanting, we know that true fans attend to enjoy the game and we hope they have a great day.
“The public are encouraged to approach police if they have any questions.
“Officers will be on hand to ensure the safety of those attending the game and those members of the public wishing to go about their normal daily business.”
Supporters are also being reminded that because there are so many away supporters travelling by coach, access to Portman Road will be restricted before and during the match, and closed for a short period of time afterwards.
The number of spaces inside the New Portman Road car park will be greatly reduced.
