AN ANGLO Italian lawyer pursuing perjury charges against a Suffolk detective said today he would represent terror suspect Osama bin Laden if asked.

Earlier this year, criminal proceedings against former Suffolk hotelier Giovanni di Stefano were dropped in the British courts after he was extradited from Italy and spent six months in Norwich prison awaiting trail on fraud charges.

The charges related a period around a decade ago when the 46-year-old ran hotels in Norfolk, Suffolk and Leicestershire and allegedly defrauded creditors of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Mr di Stefano, who has also claimed links to Saddam Hussein in the past, walked free from court in May after a judge at Southend Crown Court ruled there had been an "abuse of process" in bringing the entrepreneur to trial.

He said he would represent the suspected mastermind behind the terrorist attacks on the United States, Osama bin Laden, if asked.

"It's clients that choose lawyers," he said. "I represent people who have committed allegedly serious crimes but don't tar me with the same brush - unless there's evidence."
