A Kesgrave pub regular has been given a lifetime ban from his local after drunkenly wielding a golf club inside the premises following an argument.

Scott Stanton, of Elmers Lane, Kesgrave, was also given a suspended prison term after pleading guilty at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court to threatening behaviour.

The incident began at around 9.40pm on February 20.

Prosecutor Colette Harper said a bar worker at The Farmhouse on Grange Farm described the 25-year-old as being in a rage.

Stanton was said to be very drunk and had got in a dispute with an unknown male.

Stanton left the pub then returned.

The manager asked him to leave which Stanton did, before re-entering through the back door.

He produced a golf club and held it above his head with both hands, saying he was going to smash the place up.

The manager took the club off Stanton and police were called.

The court was told the manager did not believe Stanton would hit him with the club, although he threatened ‘to do’ another man.

Larissa Hutson, mitigating, said the golf club belonged to Stanton.

Speaking about what happened Mrs Hutson said: “It’s an absolute act of stupidity. He can’t explain his behaviour or particularly remember it.”

Stanton, a dock worker, admitted he was extremely drunk.

Magistrates were told he had not intended to smash up the pub or harm anyone. He just wanted to scare the other person.

Mrs Hutson added: “He is banned from the pub for life after being a regular there for three years.

Stanton was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

He must also carry out 60 hours’ unpaid work and undertake a rehabilitation requirement.

In addition Stanton must pay £85 costs, as well as £80 to the victims’ fund.
