Were you in Ipswich when Margaret Thatcher visited in April 1979, just one month before she won the general election?
One month before she became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher visited Ipswich in a final attempt to win over voters in April 1979.
Mrs Thatcher addressed the hundreds of people that gathered on Cornhill and delivered a speech on the steps of the Town Hall.
Afterwards, she visited a local farm to discuss agricultural policies with farmers and visited several retail outlets in the town centre.
The visit proved effective, as the Conservative Party won the majority vote in Ipswich in the 1979 general election - and Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister.
