Lisa Crane, spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said emergency services were called to the scene outside dockgate one at 5.20pm.

She said: “A lorry had gone over on the roundabout. Ourselves, paramedics and the fire service attended the scene.

“Sadly at 6.30pm the lorry driver was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Miss Crane said the police had put diversions in place after closing a section of the road and heavy lifting gear would be used to clear the roundabout.

The man, who has not been named, is not thought to be from the Ipswich or Felixstowe area.

Carl Middleditch who witnessed the scene said it appeared the lorry was headed towards the port when it overturned. He added: “We often see lorries overturning here but its unusual for someone to get killed.”

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Trust said a team of paramedics and a doctor, two ambulances and Felixstowe Dock ambulance all attended the incident.

He said: “There was some difficulty getting to the patient as he was trapped. Unfortunately nothing could be done for him. He was deceased.”

A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Felixstowe and Ipswich used hydraulic equipment to release the driver.

The road was closed until around midnight.
