THE regeneration of an active sailing harbour in Woodbridge will be given a boost by a Heritage Lottery funded project.

The Management Committee which looks after the ancient Tide Mill has unveiled plans to improve the surrounding quayside in the second phase of a project first started by the town council.

The council has already improved the road and verges leading to the Tide Mill to give better access for emergency services to the Granary, Tide Mill and Tide Mill Yacht Harbour.

Now plans have been unveiled for engineering work to stabilise the quay and dredge the river adjacent to the quay to provide five short-term moorings with the aim of encouraging more people to moor their boats for a couple of hours or a night to access facilities in the town.

The total cost of all the work involved in both phases is approaching £70,000 and it includes benches for visitors to admire the views of the River Deben.

The National Trust has also shown an interest in the project because it hopes that it can run a ferry from the revamped Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon ship burial site over to the Tide Mill.

The Trust aims to bring in 50,000 visitors annually when it opens Sutton Hoo in March and there is the potential for an enormous economic spin-off for Woodbridge.

Up to 40 people representing Woodbridge organisations, the National Trust and the Suffolk Preservation Society attended a meeting in the Shire Hall to be updated on the quay project. An application for lottery funding will be submitted by the end of October and it will take between four and six months to obtain the result.
