PENSIONER Lucy Davies has died six days after she was seriously injured in a road accident near her Ipswich home.

She had been fighting a desperate battle for life after being taken to Ipswich Hospital with serious injuries suffered in a car crash on Friday.

Her son Jock said his mum's recent happiness had taken some of the bitterness away from her death overnight.

But Evening Star cartoonist Jock confirmed her mum had lost her dignified fight.

He said: "We're pretty devastated really because she didn't die naturally, she was killed.

"But she found a lot of happiness with her friend over the last few years.

"It's tragic that it's been taken away from her."

Lucy was driving with her friend Jeffrey Woolfe-Emery last Friday afternoon when they were involved in a head-on collision in Belmont Road, Ipswich.

It was the second tragedy to strike in less than two weeks. Lucy had already had to overcome an arson attack on her Birkfield Drive flat.

Family gathered around the 76-year-old pensioner as she fought for her life in Ipswich Hospital.

Jock added: "She kept on smiling through all the pipes around her. She was a grand old lady and died with dignity. It was incredibly painful for her at the end, but she kept her head up."

Hospital staff had been planning to wrap Lucy's beloved dog in an isolation unit to allow a special visit.

Lucy and pet Twinkle had been pining for each other ever since the crash. But, tragically, Lucy was never to see her "little baby" again.

Jock said his brother and two sisters would pull together to get them through the pain. "We're a very close family and we get that from her. She was a great mum."
