TEENAGE magician David Johnson is set to disappear from his home town for four months - to take up a fantastic opportunity to kick-start his showbiz career.

Sixteen-year-old David will leave Felixstowe just ten days after taking his last GCSE exam to work alongside top magicians at one of Europe's best-known cabaret venues.

He will be performing at Scary's House Of Illusion in Salou in Spain, which he hopes will launch the career he has dreamed about since he received a magic set for his fifth birthday.

“It's a very rare opportunity and a fantastic one, too,” said David, who is studying at Deben High School and lives with his mum and dad Carol and Mike Johnson in Fleetwood Avenue, Felixstowe.

“I am so excited and really looking forward to it.

“Just being there every day alongside some of the very best magicians will enable me to learn so much.

“It will be a great experience and great to have on my CV.”

David - a member of Ipswich Magic Society - went for the audition for the House of Illusion job back in January at Bromley in London and had a long wait until hearing this month that he had been chosen.

Auditions were held all over the country and only the very best magicians were taken on.

He will be expected to do three shows each day, including performing at another cabaret venue, too.

“It will be great because it will enable me to do all the stage magic I have been doing, as well as close up magic and some bigger illusions,” he said.

David, who has two older sisters and a brother, has set his heart on a career as a magician.

He taught himself, learning gradually from a books and videos, and tricks he was bought - practising hours and hours to get them absolutely right. He is also a keen carpenter and makes a lot of his own props.

Last year he took part in the in the heats for the final of the Young Magician of the Year competition in London.

His mum Carol said: “Going to Spain is a wonderful opportunity for David and we want to thank the members of the Ipswich Magical Society for all the help and encouragement they have given him.”

David is available for bookings - for further information pop into Play and Exchange in Great Eastern Square, Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, or ring 01394 272021.
