SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is intending to carry out a makeover on its main Ipswich store.

If planning permission is granted the store at Copdock Interchange will be "refreshed" and extended.

Catherine Edwards, spokeswoman for Tesco, said: "The store is due for a ten year refresh. It will have a refit and be brought up to date."

Although it is on the edge of Ipswich, the store is actually in Babergh district.

If planning permission is granted by the district council, the store will also be extended slightly and changes will be made to the pharmacy.

Ms Edwards added: "The pharmacy facilities will be improved to provide more space.

"There is the possibility that the pharmacy will be moved although this cannot be confirmed at the moment

The car park will also be revised to provide easier access for customers.

A new footpath and canopy will then be needed so customers can safely access the store from the revised car park.

Tesco opened at Copdock in 1987 following a lengthy planning battle which was decided by the government.

It was expanded four years ago when extra space for household goods and non-food lines was created.

Also a new retail park and park-and-ride centre grew around the store.

The current plans are due to be considered on September 21.

If approval is given, work should start soon after then.
