A 65-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving and failing to notify the authorities of a disability after a cyclist sustained life-threatening injuries in Ipswich.

The male cyclist was hurt at the roundabout where the A1189 Nacton Road meets the junction with Ravenswood Avenue.

Police have said a man riding a black and white Giant bicycle was travelling around the roundabout, when at the point he passed the junction with Nacton Road where traffic joins from the direction of the A14, a car entered the roundabout.

As the cyclist and what was believed to be a Honda Civic continued towards the Ravenswood Avenue junction the man fell off his bike.

He was initially taken to Ipswich Hospital having suffered a serious head injury, before subsequently being transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

The incident occurred at around 8.30pm on Wednesday, June 8.

Two days later Timothy Cracknell, a spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary, said the victim remained in a serious condition with injuries that were described as life-threatening.

The night after the collision police arrested a 65-year-old man from the Ipswich area on suspicion of failing to stop after an accident and driving without due care and attention.

He was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning and was released on bail to return to at the end of July pending further enquires.

The suspect was then re-bailed until earlier this month as the investigation continued.

Police have now said he was charged when he answered his bail earlier this month.

Laura Caulton, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary, said: “David Sergeant, 65, of The Street, Rushmere St Andrew, has been charged with three offences – failing to stop after an accident, dangerous driving causing serious injury and failing to notify the authorities of a disability.

“He has been bailed to appear before Ipswich magistrates on November 21.
