Emergency services were called to a row of flats in Little Gipping Street around 8.45pm to reports of a blaze.

Police attended and the suspect, from Ipswich, was arrested around 9.20pm.

He was taken into custody at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre to be interviewed about how the fire started.

Speaking at the scene, watch commander Mark Cragg from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had spread to a property from a pile of rubbish outside.

The householder said everyone had safely made it out of the building.

“I was more worried about my cat to be honest but he made it out fine,” he said.

“I’m grateful they turned up so quickly. If it was any longer I don’t know what would have happened.”

Suffolk Constabulary is asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time to call 101, quoting CAD number 423 of yesterday.
