The police officer, from Braintree, is recovering in hospital after receiving knife wounds to his face while on duty.
The officer, in his early twenties, was blocking roads after an accident close to Stansted Airport at 8am today .
The male driver of a Vauxhall Corsa was killed in the two-car collision at Molehill Green at 6am.
The driver, of the four by four Landrover, from Scunthorpe, was taken to Harlow's Princess Alexandra Hospital suffering from head injuries.
