DETECTIVES investigating an alleged sex attack have arrested a man.

The assault is said to have taken place in an alleyway off St Peter's Street in Ipswich at about 5.30am.

The path is used as a seating area beside the licensed premises of Bar IV and was cordoned off as a crime scene.

The victim is said to be a 22-year-old from the Ipswich area.

But Suffolk police said this evening that a man had been arrested.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police investigating after a 22-year-old woman reported that she had been sexually assaulted in an alleyway on St Peter's Street in Ipswich have now arrested a man in his 20s in connection with the incident.

“He is currently in custody at Ipswich Police Station where he will be interviewed by detectives.”

Police were alerted to the attack when they received a telephone call on the woman's behalf.

As people went to work this morning they could see the alleyway between St Peter's Street and Turret Lane was sealed off.

The wrought iron gates beside Bar IV were closed and police tape criss-crossed over them.
