Christopher Andrews, of Christchurch Street, Ipswich, will appear before magistrates in the town on Tuesday.
The 42-year-old is charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
PC Tony Adams, 29, is still recovering today following the attack near the town centre in the early hours of yesterday morning. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Father-of two, PC Adams, lives in the Woodbridge area. He has been with Suffolk police for five years.
He was stabbed in the abdomen when investigating an alarm at business premises in St Helen's Street at about 2.50am.
