A MAN who allegedly indecently assaulted an 11-year-old girl has appeared at court in Ipswich.

Melvyn Potter, of Felix Road, Ipswich, is charged with indecently assaulting a female under 16. He is also charged with allowing indecent photographs of a child under 16 to be taken.

He has yet to enter pleas to either of the charges, which allegedly occurred between May 1 and July 20.

Potter, 56, appeared for the first time at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court yesterday.

Wearing a green jacket and glasses, as he stood expressionless in the dock, the defendant spoke only to confirm his details to the court.

During a ten-minute hearing Potter sat down as representations were made by crown prosecutor Michael Crimp.

Magistrates passed an order preventing the names of any of the alleged victims being printed by the press.

Potter was remanded in custody by magistrates. His solicitor, Roger Thomson, did not make an application for bail.

The case was adjourned by magistrates and Potter is due to return to the same Ipswich court next Tuesday.
