A MAN has called Suffolk Police claiming that he knows who raped a 19-year-old girl in a dark footpath.

The man called the police headquarters in Martlesham just after 9.20am last Saturday morning, the day after the Evening Star published CCTV footage showing the rapist with his victim.

However, the man rang off without leaving his contact details or giving all of his information to the operator.

"During the conversation the man, who spoke with a local accent, indicated he might know someone who could be the rapist," said Detective Superintendent Roy Lambert, who is leading the investigation.

"He said he knew someone who resembled the E-fit picture (also featured in the Star) ... along with CCTV images, although there was some difference in the hair style.

"Although the caller gave his first name, which we are not releasing, he did not give us his contact details and then rang off without giving us the name of the suspect.

"I would appeal for this caller to contact us again. He could have vital information, which could help us trace the rapist. It is important we follow up his information."

Det Supt Lambert said that the caller is obviously known to the person he suspects of being the rapist and must have concerns about his consequences. He assured the caller that he can speak to police in confidence, without giving his name.

The rapist is described as white, aged in his early 20s, about 5ft 8ins to 5ft 9ins, of plump build, with short "spiky" brown hair. He approached his victim at Ipswich Railway Station shortly after 12.30am on Saturday, July 28, walking her through Ipswich before raping her near the Pauls Sports Social Club down Stone Lodge Lane.

A rape incident room has been set up and about 20 officers have been drafted in to work on the investigation.

Over 100 calls have now been received from the public, and nearly 50 statements taken.

If you have any information, call Suffolk Police 01473 613999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or e-mail incident.room@suffolk.police.uk
