A SUFFOLK labourer claims a policewoman was injured when officers carrying him to a police cell dropped him.

Matthew Kyte, 20, told a jury at Ipswich Crown Court yesterday that he was being carried face down with his hands cuffed behind his back by four officers when he was dropped to the ground.

He then heard Wpc Nicola Flack, who had been holding one of his arms, screaming in pain.

Kyte denied thrashing around causing one of the policemen to loose his grip and Wpc Flack to fall over.

Kyte, a civil engineers labourer, of Hall Road, Lowestoft, has denied inflicting grievous bodily harm on Wpc Flack who suffered a dislocated elbow in the alleged incident last August.

It has been alleged that Kyte was arrested for disorderly behaviour after losing his temper when officers arrested one of his friends in London Road South, Lowestoft in the early hours of the morning.

Kyte who has no previous convictions, refused to let officers handcuff him and had allegedly tried to headbutt a policeman as he was put in the back of a police van, said John Akast, prosecuting.

Kyte allegedly shouted and swore at officers in the van and made threats.

On his arrival at Lowestoft Police Station Kyte allegedly refused to get out of the van and was carried into the station's custody suite by four officers.

As he was being carried to a cell, Kyte allegedly began thrashing around violently resulting in Wpc Flack falling to the ground.

She was left screaming in pain with a dislocated elbow and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Giving evidence yesterday Kyte told the court that he had been upset because he felt he and his friend had been arrested for no good reason.

He said that although he had sworn at the officers and made it difficult for them to handcuff him, he had not struggled or threatened the officers.

Kyte denied trying to headbutt a policeman and said he had been willing to walk into the police station but had not been allowed to.

He claimed that the officers who carried him into the police station and to a cell had knocked his head against a wall and a gate.

He had also been injured when he was dropped to the ground when Wpc Flack was injured.

The jury is expected to retire to consider its verdict today.
