A MAN died after falling from a boat in an incident which sparked a major rescue attempt.

The 72-year-old from Ipswich, who has not been named, died after falling into the water from a boat at a boatyard in Mill Lane, Walton on the Naze, following a night out.

A Sea King rescue helicopter from Wattisham Airfield, Clacton lifeboat, Walton and Felixstowe coastguard, an ambulance and police were all called to the scene at about 1.45am yesterday.

The man is believed to have fallen into the water as he was getting onto a boat after a night out with relatives. He may have suffered a heart attack, according to the coastguard.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "A 72-year-old man from Ipswich was pronounced dead at hospital. We were called by the ambulance service after a report that he fell into the water.

"We went down and monitored the situation to see if police were needed, but there was nothing suspicious about the incident.

"He was with relatives and coming back from an evening out. He was down by the dockside, getting onto a boat when he fell. The matter will now be passed to the coroner's office.''

A spokesman for the air sea rescue B Flight 22 Squadron, based at Wattisham Airfield near Stowmarket, said they were among those scrambled to the incident after receiving reports that the man had suffered a suspected heart attack.

He said: "We lowered a winchman down to the water, where the man was and took him to hospital. We gave him fluids and made him comfortable while he was with us. He was in a comfortable condition when he arrived at hospital, although it looked like a heart attack. ''

However, police said he was later pronounced dead at Ipswich Hospital.
