A 54-YEAR-OLD man died in a car fire in Temple Road, Stowmarket this afternoon.

Emergency services were alerted to the tragedy shortly before 3.40pm after a man was seen inside the silver Honda car which was on fire.

A 16-year-old was taken to West Suffolk Hospital after sustaining burns to his arms during the same incident. He was not thought to be in the car.

A resident of Temple Road who lives a few metres from where the silver car was parked said he was the first person on the scene.

The man, who wished not to be identified, said: "I was outside and heard a bang. I saw another person in the street near the car and I asked if there was anybody else in the car. He said there was and I tried the door, but it couldn't get it open. I don't know if it was locked.

"Inside the car all there were flames and thick black smoke but I couldn't get the door open so I ran back to the house and picked up a fire extinguisher.

"I then tried to extinguish the fire but I couldn't get near the car as it was too hot."

Shattered glass could be seen on the pavement next to the front passenger side door.

Temple Road, a cul-de-sac, remained closed at the far end at the junction of Unity Road while scenes of crime officers remained at the scene
