A 39-YEAR-OLD man has fallen from a wall into a Suffolk stream and drowned.

The accident happened at the rear of Brooklands Cottage, in Bury Road, Brettenham, near Stowmarket.

Five firemen were called to the scene and used two ladders to pull the body out of the River Brett which fell 5ft into the water.

Today the householder who discovered the body and made the 999 call paid tribute to the man and to the emergency services.

She said: "He was one of nature's charmers, he was a super man. He was one of the nicest men it's been my pleasure to meet – he was a marvellous husband, father and grandfather.

"He had a cold yesterday and I wondered what he was doing here.

"I went to put the kettle on and take him a cup of tea when I saw him under the water – I thought it was a stone at first.

"I called the police and was amazed at how fabulous the services were. They were like grease lightning. The police, the fire service, the ambulance and the coroner were all brilliant. Everything worked like clockwork."

The woman, who did not wish to be identified, said that she did not know if the gardener had a history of heart trouble.

The 39-year-old man, a retired BT engineer who lives in Rougham leaves behind a wife, son and daughter.
