A fundraiser from Ipswich delivering charity raffle prizes in Felixstowe at the weekend was shocked to discover he had been issued a parking ticket when briefly away from his car.

Dave Brown, 55, of Newbury Road, had loaded up his vehicle with gifts for the ‘Great Get-together’ charity event at Felixstowe Sea Angling Society’s beachfront club house.

The event, organised by Mr Brown though his fishing shop Breakaway Tackle, looked to raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

Mr Brown drove to the club house on Saturday, August 12, parking his car on a grass verge in Manor Terrace, which he believed belonged to the angling society.

But soon after he had emptied the car, a parking warden arrived and posted a ticket on his windscreen.

Mr Brown’s wife approached the warden to explain that they were only there for a few minutes and were dropping off raffle prizes but was told he had already written the ticket so there was nothing he could do.

Mr Brown said he thought the ticket was ‘a little out of order’.

“To be fair, if he had come over and said you shouldn’t park there I would have moved it,” he said.

“I had always thought that strip of land was owned by the angling club. Obviously I was wrong but even the angling club thought it was their land otherwise they wouldn’t have cut the grass.

“If I had parked there for a long time and was out fishing I could understand getting a ticket.

“What has really got me is we were there doing the charity thing for EACH and my wife went up to the chap to explain what we were doing. She told him we were there for the charity and that I had to park there because we have all these raffle prizes to unload.

“But he gave us a ticket anyway.

“I just think it was a little out of order, he was being a jobsworth.”

Mr Brown said he was planning to appeal the fine.

This was the third time Mr Brown has held the Great Get-Together event which has raised more than £2,000 for EACH.

A Suffolk Coastal spokeswoman said the car was parked in an unauthorised area.

“In these circumstances you do not receive a 10 minute grace period as you are parked outside of a permitted bay,” she said.

“If Mr Brown would like to make an appeal, he can do so online or post to Suffolk Coastal Norse.”
