A 33-year-old man appeared in court today charged with the attempted murder of a man during a fight in Ipswich.

Djillali Sultani, who is also facing a charge of causing grievous bodily harm, was arrested after a 28-year-old man suffered knife wounds to the chest outside the Hare and Hounds pub in Ipswich on Wednesday evening.

Appearing before South East Suffolk Magistrates dressed in a T-shirt with his right forearm heavily bandaged, Sultani, of no fixed address, spoke in a forthright manner to give his full name and date of birth.

Chairman of the bench Jaqueline Holmes committed the case to Ipswich Crown Court.

Sultani, who was represented by Tim Ridyard, was remanded in custody until January 28.

During the hearing that lasted little over ten minutes, Sultani made several interruptions as prosecutor Andrew Fitch-Holland outlined the case – once to correct the pronunciation of the name of his alleged victim.

Two police officers were ordered to file into court number three as a precaution.

Drinkers in the Hare and Hounds pub in Norwich Road were horrified when two men burst through its doors arguing. Immediately after the incident police sealed off Orford Street at the back of the pub.
