Man in custody after machete attack

A 57-YEAR-old man is in hospital today after he was attacked with a machete in a town centre pub.Police have arrested a 56-year-old man on suspicion of the assault, which happened in The Grinning Rat, St Helen's Street, last night and are due to interview him today.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 10.20pm following calls that a man had been injured after being hit with a machete.

A crew from the East of England Ambulance Trust took him to Ipswich Hospital, where he remains today, suffering from a deep cut to his head.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.

A Suffolk Police spokesman said: “A 56-year-old man was hit by a machete. It happened on the pub premises.

“This was not a random attack.

“A 56-year-old was arrested last night and is in custody at Ipswich Police station. He will be interviewed by officers today.”

He was being questioned on suspicion of causing grevious body

As it was a busy Friday night in the town centre, dozens of officers were able to reach the scene quickly and deal with the incident. Several revellers were around the area at the time and police say they have secured some witnesses.

It is believed those involved in the incident knew each other.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Trust said: “We were called to The Grinning Rat in St Helen's Street to reports of a stabbing.

“We took one man to hospital with injuries. He is in a stable condition.”

It was originally thought the incident was more serious as there were reports he had suffered an open fracture to the skull.
