A MAN was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition this morning after he was involved in a four-car accident on the A12 in Essex.

The crash happened at about 8.30am close to the Galleywood junction on the London-bound carriageway of the busy trunk road.

The 20-year-old man was taken by air ambulance to Queen's Hospital in Romford suffering from serious injuries.

Several other people were taken to hospital. These included a 21-year-old woman with back and knee injuries, a 34-year-old woman with shoulder, back and neck injuries and a man suffering from shock.

They were all taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, along with at least three members of a family suffering from minor injuries.

The two women were freed from their vehicles by firefighters using specialist cutting equipment.

Crews from Witham, Colchester and two from Chelmsford went to the scene as motorists faced lengthy queues.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said paramedics attending the scene were assisted by an off-duty nurse and a passing Thames Ambulance Service vehicle.
