A customer at an Suffolk pub who cut a woman's ear by swinging a glass has been jailed for nine months.

The incident took place after a barmaid at the Waterlily pub refused to serve Shaun Mills in the early hours of New Year’s Day because of his drunken behaviour, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

She went to the smoking area to talk to the landlord about Mills and was joined by Tina Wicks, who didn’t know Mills, but was also concerned about the way he was behaving. Mills followed them and picked up a glass and there was some pushing and shoving while attempts were made to take the glass away from Mills, who ended up with a black eye and cuts.

He retaliated by swinging the glass, which struck Miss Wicks’ ear.

Mills, 29, of Montgomery Road, Ipswich, admitted assaulting Miss Wicks causing her actual bodily harm.

Isobel Ascherson, for Mills, said he regretted the injury to Miss Wicks.
