A man who tried to break into a house in Ipswich less than two weeks after a court gave him a chance to kick his drug habit has been jailed for 15 months.

Scott Hyam, 31, was given a community order which included a drug rehabilitation order on March 3 this year for three offences of burglary, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Thirteen days later on March 16 he tried to break into a house in Beechwood Drive, said Michael Crimp, prosecuting.

He also stole a rucksack from a car parked outside the house and took alcohol from a hut in the property’s grounds.

The offences came to light the next day after the owner viewed CCTV footage and saw Hyam trying the utility door of his home and taking his son’s school bag from a car.

Hyam, of Ramsgate Drive, Ipswich, admitted attempted burglary, burglary and theft.

Roger Thomson, for Hyam, said his client’s drug rehabilitation order hadn’t started by the time he committed the offences.
