A SUFFOLK man who was seen acting suspiciously by the police at a multi storey car park in Norwich was supplying heroin, Norwich Crown Court heard.

Prosecuting, Katharine Moore, told the court how 30-year-old Benjamin Brooks, of St Johns Street, Woodbridge, was seen by the police at St Giles Street multi storey car park, Norwich on June 1, bending down and acting suspiciously.

After he left the area the police went to see what he had done, and found a brick with a cling film wrap hidden underneath it.

They then waited to see what would happen and Brooks returned with another man, went to the brick and handed the package to him.

The police arrested him and the package was found to contain 305 milligrammes of heroin, that was 51 per cent pure heroin, and had a street value of £45.

In a police interview he said that he was showing the man the drugs on behalf of a dealer who was near the market place.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing a class A drug with intent and had previous convictions for dishonesty and drugs offences.

Defending him, Samantha Leigh said that he had suffered with depression for some time since the breakdown of his parents' marriage, and had got involved in the drugs culture but that he was taking steps to get away from it.

Judge Simon Barham said in sentencing him to 12 months in prison that the offence was so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified, but that he had kept the sentence as short as was possible.
