A man accused of stabbing a homeless man in Ipswich town centre has been jailed for seven and a half years.
Before Ipswich Crown Court today was Jamie Phillips, 26, who admitted wounding Benjamin Douglas with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm.
Phillips was living at Cavendish Lodge supported accommodation in Ipswich at the time.
Sentencing Phillips, Judge Rupert Overbury said he had prepared himself for the attack on Mr Douglas by going back to his accommodation and arming himself with a knife.
He said Phillips had told a witness he was going to stab someone.
In addition to jailing Phillips for seven and a half years Judge Overbury passed an extended licence period of three and a half years.
He said an extended sentence was necessary to protect the public from the significant risk he posed of committing further serious offences in the future.
He said that after Phillips had served two thirds of the sentence his case could be referred to the Parole Board but he would only be released if it was considered safe to do so.
